WISDOM AND CONCENTRATION

Nora_ISF2024_6_0061

After a feast of teachings in week one of the Summer Festival, we now have two days of retreat with Gen Rabten to deepen our wisdom in meditation. Following Gen-la Dekyong's advice, the retreat focuses on going deeply by using the same sequence of meditations in each session. This has a number of benefits, giving everyone time to develop familiarity with the contemplations and objects of meditation, and giving quiet, time and space for each person to go on their own inner journey in retreat.

MAKING THE MOST OF RETREAT ~ Gen Kelsang Rabten

There is a beautiful hush in the Temple, as many people try to observe silence before the sessions. There is time to settle our minds and let go of distractions. As we are trying to gain experience of the perfection of wisdom, Gen Rabten guides us in an initial powerful meditation on compassion. This is followed by the Heart Sutra to dispel obstacles and receive blessings and the actual meditation on the emptiness of the body. Finally, as we arise from meditation, we listen to the profound advice from Venerable Geshe-la given in Portugal on how to practice in the meditation break with respect to our body. "We are seeing or perceiving just an appearance, but we do not believe that it exists."

There is something so incredibly unique about what we are doing: over a thousand people in person, together with thousands online, meditating together on the "mere absence of the body that we normally see."

Day 6 ~ ENJOYING OUR PEACE

Between sessions the Festival site feels so tranquil and calm as people continue to contemplate their meditations, or to quietly discuss them. It feels so valuable and helpful to have this retreat time and it reveals Venerable Geshe-la's great skill and vision in structuring the Festival in this way for us.

"I find it very refreshing and helpful to be left alone in long periods of silence during which my mind is allowed to move at its own pace through the contemplations.

Guided meditations put my mind into a more passive mode. Silence requires and drives actual full-on engagement from our side, but once we learn how to do that it is very empowering: the mind begins to switch gears into deeper understanding and experience."
