Annual Auspicious Days
15th April
Buddha’s Enlightenment Day
On this day we celebrate the occasion when Buddha Shakyamuni showed the manner of accomplishing the ultimate goal of living beings – the attainment of enlightenment – at Bodh Gaya, India in 589 BC. With this auspicious deed he demonstrated how each one of us can overcome all internal and external obstacles and hindrances and become an enlightened being.
4th June
Turning the Wheel of Dharma Day
This day marks the anniversary of Buddha’s first teaching in this world and also the birthday of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche, the Founder of the New Kadampa Tradition – International Kadampa Buddhist Union.
Forty-nine days after Buddha attained enlightenment, as a result of requests he rose from meditation and taught the first Wheel of Dharma. These teachings, which include the Sutra of the Four Noble Truths and other discourses, are the principal source of the Hinayana, or Lesser Vehicle, of Buddhism.
22nd Sep
Return From Heaven Day
On this day we celebrate the occasion when Buddha Shakyamuni returned to this world having visited the god realm known as Land of the Thirty-three Heavens, where his mother had been reborn after she died. Buddha repaid the kindness of his mother by guiding her and the gods in that realm along the spiritual path to a state of permanent inner peace and happiness. It is an occasion to celebrate Buddha’s great kindness and compassion.

Tara Day
Tara is a female Buddha, a manifestation of the ultimate wisdom of all the Buddhas who protects us from internal and external obstacles. Kadampa Buddhists have a special relationship with Buddha Tara because she promised Atisha, the founder of Kadampa Buddhism, that she would protect his followers in the future.
On the 8th day of each month Kadampa centers do Tara practice for the sake of all living beings.
10th and 25th of the month
Tsog Days
On these two days Kadampa centers remember the kindness of their Spiritual Guide by performing the Offering to the Spiritual Guide puja - a special Guru yoga of Je Tsongkhapa that includes all the essential practices of the stages of the path (Lamrim) and training the mind (Lojong), as well as both the generation and completion stages of Highest Yoga Tantra.
By relying upon Je Tsongkhapa, our compassion, wisdom and spiritual power naturally increase. Engaging in Offering to the Spiritual Guide is also an occasion for Tantric practitioners to renew commitments and avert obstacles by making a special offering known as the ‘tsog offering’.

Precepts Day
This day is an opportunity to strengthen our moral discipline by engaging in a special purification practice called A Pure Life, which involves taking and keeping the eight Mahayana precepts for a day.
This practice is performed with bodhichitta motivation, the compassionate wish to attain enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. The essence of this practice is taking eight precepts and keeping them purely for twenty-four hours. We first need to receive these precepts from a qualified Preceptor, and then we can take them on our own as often as we wish.
Because this practice is motivated by bodhichitta it is especially powerful for purifying negativities, accumulating merit – a positive strength of mind – and creating the cause for us to attain the unsurpassed happiness of enlightenment.
29th of the month
Protector Day
The Dharma Protector of the New Kadampa Tradition is Dorje Shugden, an emanation of the Wisdom Buddha Manjushri. His function is to protect us from obstacles that impede our spiritual progress and provide all the necessary conditions for our practice.
On this day we make special offerings and requests to the Wisdom Dharma Protector using the extensive sadhana - ritual prayer for spiritual attainments - called ‘Melodious Drum’. This practice is used for fulfilling our heart commitment to practice Lamrim, Lojong and Mahamudra and to rely upon the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden, regarding him as inseparable from our Spiritual Guide and Buddha, and for restoring any degenerate or broken commitments we may have incurred.
