Empowerment of Medicine Buddha
Teachings on The Eleven Reversals
Follow daily updates from the festival
After another wonderful meditation session on Medicine Buddha we had the final two teachings from Gen-la Khyenrab. In the first teaching he completed the commentary to the practice of the eleven reversals. First we learned the importance of developing the supreme good heart of bodhichitta and reversing our self-cherishing mind. Teaching how self-cherishing is both the creator and basis of all our misery and problems, he advised us to use simple but devastating logic to move our cherishing from self to others by contemplating how we are only one and others are countless and we all have the same wish to be happy and free from suffering. He said, “If we believe this, great freedom will happen in our mind, a great turning around.” This turning around and freedom is another way to understand the actual lived experience of the reversals in our mind.
Then we moved to the practice of developing wisdom to reverse our ignorance and release us from the delusions, with Gen-la encouraging us to get a heart-felt feeling for emptiness and to experience a cessation of grasping at the self we normally see. Finally in the last two reversals he shared how experience of the two stages of Tantra oppose our ordinary appearances and conceptions and reverse our subtle dualistic appearance. In the last teaching of the day, Gen-la came full circle and returned to the theme of how to meditate, sharing powerful teachings on how to practice meditation in union with daily life.
All through the Festival we have been developing a pure heart, engaging in virtuous actions of body as we join in with volunteer work, virtuous actions of speech as we discuss Dharma and sing the beautiful prayers, and many, many virtuous actions of mind in the form of our our meditations, our pure intentions and our development of the Bodhisattva mind. We conclude by dedicating all this for world peace and for the flourishing of these Kadampa methods that work to create inner and outer peace in the world.
Appropriately, the day ends with Offering to the Spiritual Guide, a powerful chanted Guru yoga practice connecting us mind to mind with our root Guru, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, from whom all these extraordinary meditations and methods have been transmitted. Through this practice we create the karma to receive the blessings of all the Buddhas and we make many requests to progress along the spiritual path for the benefit of all.
Enjoy the Migtsema prayer in Spanish. At each NKT-IKBU Festival, at the end of the last teaching, the prayer is recited in the language of the host country. It always sounds so joyful!
When we free our mind from self-cherishing we will attain the supreme happiness of Enlightenment.
