Discovering Emptiness ~ A Joint Retreat at IKRC Grand Canyon

KMC San Francisco and KMC Los Angeles joined together for a remarkable retreat at the picturesque IKRC Grand Canyon temple. The resident teachers, Gen Kelsang Rigpa and Gen Kelsang Choma, skillfully explained and guided meditations on the profound concept of emptiness. Participants from both centers came together to deepen their understanding and cultivate inner peace in the scenic setting of the Grand Canyon.

"We experienced so much magic and inner peace this weekend through the power of being immersed in the three precious jewels. Through Gen Kelsang Choma’s and Gen Kelsang Rigpa’s profound teachings and encouraging guidance, we gently contemplated the true nature of ourselves, dissolving into a joyful, space-like emptiness the ordinary and stuck versions of ourself that we assume to exist inherently and permanently. While massive blessings of all the lineage gurus poured down into us within the sublime mandala, we playfully searched for the existence of a “self we normally see” — that painful identity we assent to and imprison ourselves in — and used a set of magical keys kindly given to us by Buddha to help us unlock the true and pure nature of who we are. These tools included the four points, the eight extremes, the perspective that we are like a rainbow of causes and conditions, the view of the transitory collection, and a powerful verse of wisdom from Buddha Shakyamuni in the King of Concentration Sutras."

"We enjoyed a space of wonder and possibility in our hearts and connected to the qualities of our mind we aspire to one day embody more completely: humility, generosity, contentment, peace, joy, compassion, acceptance, love. How fortunate are we to create this powerful karma together in such an auspicious place!

"And a very special final session with Gen Kelsang Rigpa! He shared the big plans and vision of KMC San Francisco and KMC Los Angeles in the future: that a new Heruka temple arise in Northern California and a new retreat center in Southern California for the benefit of all! KMC San Francisco and KMC Los Angeles will play a huge part in helping make this happen, through ongoing prayers and working to create the causes locally. Our final meditation was to strongly imagine this happens for the benefit of all, so that millions of people come to California in the future to meet Buddha Dharma."

Also on the weekend of April 22, 60 people participated in the Healing Meditation Retreat in the town of Ocean Park on the southern Washington coast. Hosted by Mahasiddha Kadampa Buddhist Center in Portland, Oregon and Tushita Kadampa Buddhist Center in Olympia, Washington, the retreat focused on the practice of Taking and Giving, with teachings given by Kadam Heather Rocklin and Gen Kelsang Rinzin. Attendees came from the host centers as well as Seattle and other areas within Washington and Oregon.
