Living Meditation is a mobile application developed by practitioners of the New Kadampa Tradition – International Kadampa Buddhist Union (NKT-IKBU) and it is intended as a means to allow spiritual connection to everyone by providing access to guided meditations, podcasts, and the ability to locate nearby Kadampa centres and events.

We are committed to protecting your privacy and handling your data in a way that is lawful, transparent, and respectful of your rights under UK and international privacy laws, including the UK GDPR, EU GDPR, and similar global standards.

1. No Sign-In Required

You do not need to create an account or sign in to use Living Meditation. The app is designed to be simple, private, and user-focused.

2. What We Collect and Why

We only collect limited, optional information to improve your experience.

a. Analytics (Optional and Anonymous)

We may collect anonymous usage data to help us understand how people use the app. This includes:

  • App version, device type, and general interaction patterns (e.g. which meditations or podcasts are most used)
  • No personally identifiable information is collected
  • Analytics are used solely to improve app performance and content

You can disable analytics in your device settings if desired.

b. Location (Optional)

If you choose to use the "Find a Centre Near Me" feature, the app may request access to your device’s location. This is used only to:

  • Show Kadampa centres or events near your current location

We:

  • Only access your location with your explicit consent
  • Do not store or track your location data

c. Newsletter Sign-Up (Handled by kadampa.org)

If you choose to sign up for a newsletter, you will be redirected to the official NKT website (kadampa.org).
Any data entered there is managed in accordance with kadampa.org’s Privacy Policy. Living Meditation does not collect or store your email address.

3. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data.
Anonymous analytics data may be processed by trusted third-party services (e.g. Google Analytics for Firebase), solely for the purpose of improving app performance.

All third-party services used comply with relevant data protection laws.

4. Legal Basis for Processing (EU & UK Users)

Under the UK GDPR and EU GDPR, we rely on the following legal bases:

  • Consent: For optional features like location and newsletter sign-up
  • Legitimate Interests: To monitor app usage trends and improve functionality (using anonymous data)

5. Data Security

We implement appropriate security measures, including:

  • Secure communication (HTTPS)
  • No storage of personally identifiable data within the app

6. Your Rights (UK, EU & Others)

Depending on your location, you may have rights to:

  • Access any personal data we hold (if applicable)
  • Request deletion or correction
  • Withdraw consent for location or analytics
  • Lodge a complaint with a data protection authority (e.g. ICO in the UK)

Since Living Meditation collects no personal data by default, most of these rights will not apply. If you sign up through kadampa.org, please refer to their policy for data rights.

7. Children’s Privacy

The app is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any personal data from children.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy if required by law or to reflect changes in the app. Updates will be posted in the app and/or on the relevant app store listing.
