Inspiring public events across Rio de Janeiro
Jun 26, 2025
When you talk to people about what they are enjoying about being at the Festival normally they say 'everything'! The spiritual program of course, and the opportunity to be immersed in Kadampa life, but one thing comes up again and again: being together. Love. Community.
You could say the Festivals run on love: love for Geshe-la, a deep motivating force; love for each other, wanting to create good conditions for the Festival so everyone can enjoy; love for all living beings, wanting to progress spiritually so we can help others find real happiness and be free from suffering.
As Geshe-la writes in his books, no virtuous action no matter how small is ever wasted. You can see people applying effort to generate love wherever you look. Someone gently removing a tiny insect from another person's clothes before she sits down. An openness towards others, even those we do not yet know. Smiling, being patient with each other. Some are taking responsibility to watch over others as they move around the site, keeping everyone safe.
Elsewhere people read or meditate between sessions to deepen their understanding and practice of love. They do their voluntary jobs, trying to serve everyone with equal love and equanimity. Some people make offerings, a powerful practice of giving, or prostrate in the Temple to purify obstacles to developing minds such as love.
At this Festival, to help us generate the three kinds of love, Tharpa Publications kindly produced a series of inspiring cards that remind us to develop these extraordinary minds in our daily lives, or that we can share with others.
Today we received very meaningful teachings on how to practice The Yoga of Buddha Maitreya from Gen-la Jampa, including profound teachings on the union of the two truths and how this is the magic that makes self generation practice work. He encouraged us that self generating is the scientific method to transform ourself into an enlightened being, enabling us to let go of our suffering reality and build a new pure reality in our minds that one day will become our direct experience.
People deeply appreciate Gen-la Jampa's teachings, finding them very clear, conclusive and heartfelt.
To conclude a wonderful day we gathered in the the Kadampa Temple for World Peace to engage in the prayers Offering to the Spiritual Guide.
In this way we can understand the unique function of Festivals explained by Venerable Geshe-la - to bring together all the conditions we need to progress spiritually and change the world.
Here Gen-la Jampa explains that realising the things we normally see do not exist, they are mistaken appearances, is the basis for any tantric self generation practice.
