Kadampa Meditation Center DC was founded by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche, a world-renowned Buddhist Master who has introduced Modern Buddhism into contemporary society.
The center is part of the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT-IKBU), a global association of more than 1,100 Buddhist Centers and branches that follow the teachings of Venerable Geshe-la.
KMC Washington D.C. was founded on Buddha's Return from Heaven day September 22nd, 1994 as Vajrayogini Buddhist Center. Originally the Center was based in NW quadrant of Washington D.C.
After many years of renting commercial spaces, in Fall 2016 due to the kindness of Venerable Geshe-la and the International Temple's Project fund, a church property was purchased in the Southwest Waterfront neighborhood of Washington D.C. for the purposes of creating a city World Peace Temple in the US Capitol City.
In early 2019 the upper floor of the Temple building underwent extensive renovations to create a beautiful 250 person meditation room and a 3 bedroom residential apartment. The lower level of the building has a second meditation room for 20 people, a community area, bookstore and dining area.
In June 2019 Gen-la Jampa opened the Temple with a ribbon cutting ceremony and special weekend course on Modern Buddhism, with teachers and practitioners from across the US attending.
The Temple is now open to the public and offers all three study programs, weekend courses, retreats.
Kadampa Meditation Center DC offers meditation classes and modern Buddhist teachings for everyone in the District of Columbia and the DC metro area. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
Normally, drop-in classes are available at the center on every day of the week, with guided meditations and teachings on applying Buddhist insights to daily life. All the teachings and meditations are designed to help you to reach your potential.
At present, due the Covid-19 situation all the center's classes are being offered online. See the website for details.
