Why do we meditate on death?

Buddha’s main teaching at the beginning of the stages of the path is on gross impermanence, particularly the impermanence of our lives and the inevitability of death. The point of this teaching is to bring this knowledge deep into our hearts and live our lives in accordance with it. This understanding of impermanence is wisdom. Often, our days are filled with activities focused solely on this life, and we rarely think about or may not even believe in future lives. However, a person who has this knowledge of impermanence won’t waste their life on meaningless things and can turn their energy inwards to find true happiness within their mind. The meditation on death can shatter our grasping at permanence, especially our attachment to the things we like as if they are permanent.
